I understand the concept of building a readership, and I have certainly been in the position of gaining only a small percentage of royalties from a publisher. (The most one can hope for is 10% of gross.) The appeal of traditional publishing for me was the physical artifact (I like to hold books in my hands), the pedigree, the advance, the distribution network, and the professional editing. I also learned “the ropes,” one of which is that unless you have a million potential readers at hand, there is very little room to negotiate with a publisher.
